Data migration terms, in plain language
Short definitions of the terms we use on this site.
Terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Logic debt | The business logic locked in legacy procedures, ETL and schedules. It drives migration cost. |
| Deterministic conversion | Conversion where the same input always gives the same output. No sampling, no randomness, so results are repeatable and auditable. |
| Reconciliation report | A per-object check that the converted output matches the original on the same inputs: schema, row counts, column values; pass, fail or review. |
| Resolver | The Novuz step that proposes fixes for edge cases the rules cannot settle. An engineer approves each one. |
| Complexity band | Low, medium or high rating per object. It sets scope and price. |
| Lineage | A map of where data comes from and where it goes, object by object. |
| Object | A unit of convertible logic: stored procedure, function, view, trigger, SSIS package, BTEQ script, Hive query or UDF, Snowflake procedure or task, job definition. Counted once; dead objects reported separately. |
| Component | Same as object. Used on the Pricing page. |
| Estate | Everything in scope for a migration: all databases, code and schedules on the source platform. |
| Automation rate | Share of objects converted with no manual edit. A one-line fix counts as manual, and dead code is excluded. |
| Reconciliation accuracy | Share of objects whose converted output passed schema, row-count and column-level checks against the original on identical inputs. |
| Equivalence guarantee | If a First Domain misses the reconciliation threshold in its charter (95% by default), after the cure period and stated exclusions, the fee is waived or credited in full. |
| CMaaP | Continuous Modernization as a Product. Novuz’s model for treating modernization as a repeatable software capability rather than a one-time project. |
| BTEQ | Teradata’s scripting tool that mixes SQL with control commands such as .IF and .GOTO. |
| SSIS | SQL Server Integration Services, Microsoft’s legacy ETL tool. Packages hold control flow, data flows and Script Tasks. |
| Iceberg | An open table format that several query engines can read. |
| Delta Lake | An open-source storage layer that brings ACID transactions to data lakes; the default table format on Databricks. |
| Drift | Changes to source or target after migration that can break equivalence. Novuz’s continuous tier reports it quarterly. |
| Parallel run | Running the old and new systems side by side on the same inputs before cutover. |
| First Domain | The first engagement after the assessment: one domain of up to 1,500 components, converted, reconciled and cutover-ready in 5 to 6 weeks, with the equivalence guarantee. |
| Assisted | An object resolved by an approved resolver proposal with no further edit. Reported separately from automated objects. |
| Dead code | Objects nothing calls or reads. Found in Discover, excluded from the count and the price. |
| Agentically primed | Agents can run Novuz through its APIs, and agents can run the pipelines Novuz delivers through MCP. The conversion in between stays deterministic. |
| Headless platform | Everything the Novuz UI does is also available through APIs, so orchestrators, CI/CD pipelines and agents can drive every stage. |
| MCP | Model Context Protocol, the standard through which a delivered pipeline’s operations can be exposed as tools an agent discovers and calls. |
